This photo was taken at 9:13 PM during a thunder storm. I was trying to capture some of the lightning in the distant clouds. I set my camera on a tripod at the window with no lights in the room and took 11 photos, but did not capture any of the lightning strikes.

I once tried to capture lightning bolts on film (can you still say that when you shoot digital?) and I live in the Lightning Bolt Capital of the World (or so they claim). I still haven't been successful. It is so much harder than you'd think until you attempt it!
